Description

The 312 is one of the four standard hearing aid cell sizes, and this card holds six of them. Each cell carries 312 on its face, with PR41 as the matching IEC code, so you can check it against the size printed inside your aid's battery door or in its handbook. The tabs are brown, the colour used for the 312 across brands: if more than one size lives in the house, the tab tells them apart before you read the number. The cells are zinc air, the chemistry used almost universally for hearing aids because it fits a lot of energy into a very small disc.

A 312 suits many receiver-in-canal and behind-the-ear aids, and some in-the-ear models; it sits between the smaller 10 and the larger 13. Six cells on a card is a sensible amount for a bedside drawer, a handbag or a coat pocket, and the card is slim enough that a spare travels easily. If you wear two aids, you are getting through two cells at a time, which is worth remembering when you work out how far a card goes.

Zinc air cells arrive with a tab sealed over the air holes and only start working once that tab is peeled off and air reaches the inside. Leave it on until you are ready to fit the cell, and once it is off, wait a minute before closing the battery door so the cell can come up to full voltage. An opened cell keeps running down whether it is in the aid or not, so there is nothing to gain from starting one early.
