Size 13 is one of the four everyday hearing aid cell sizes, and it is the one that wears an orange tab. This card holds six of them, marked 13 on the face and coded PR48 on the pack. They are zinc air cells, which means each one is sealed by that coloured tab until you need it. Pull the tab away and air reaches the electrode through the small holes underneath, and only then does the cell start to work. Until that moment it simply sits, which is what makes a strip of spares worth keeping in a coat pocket or a bedside drawer.

The quickest way to be sure of the size is the colour. Hearing aid cells follow a standard: orange is 13, brown is 312, yellow is 10 and blue is 675, so if the tab on the cell already in your aid is orange, this is the one you want. Size 13 is most often found in behind the ear aids and in the larger in the ear styles, where there is room for a taller cell. It is the same diameter as a 312 but noticeably thicker, so the two are not interchangeable, even though the numbers sit beside each other on a shelf.

Which hearing aids take a size 13 cell?

Any aid whose battery door is marked 13 or PR48, most often a behind the ear model or a larger in the ear one. The orange tab on the cell currently fitted is the fastest confirmation.

How long should I wait after peeling the tab off?

Give the cell about a minute in open air before you close the battery door. Zinc air cells draw oxygen through the small holes under the tab, and that short pause lets the voltage settle.

Can I put the tab back on to save a cell?

Once air has reached the cell it has started working, and replacing the tab does not stop that. Peel a tab only when you are ready to fit the cell into the aid.

Is a size 312 the same as a size 13?

No. They share a diameter but a 13 is the taller cell, so a 312 will rattle in a 13 compartment and a 13 will not close into a 312 one.
