Description

This gold skeleton wall clock draws a clean, open circle on the wall. Rather than a solid face, it is built from two slim gold rings joined by twelve straight bars, one for each hour, so the wall behind shows through and becomes part of the clock. There are no numerals to read; the bars mark the hours instead, and the eye falls on the round gold centre boss and the two spade hands that sweep from it. At 80cm across it reads clearly from across a room, yet the open design keeps it light rather than heavy on the eye.

Because so much of it is open space, it suits a large wall that needs a focal point without clutter: above a fireplace or a dining table, on a stairwell wall, in a wide hallway or across the main wall of a living room. The gold looks warm against white, cream and soft grey walls, and it holds its own against deeper painted colours too. It is a lovely new home gift for someone furnishing their first place or settling into a bigger one, especially if they like a simple, contemporary look with a little warmth.

The clock runs on one AA battery (MN1500), so there is no cable to hide and no need for a socket nearby; you can hang it wherever the wall suits it best. At 4.5cm deep it sits close to the wall. For care, simply dust the rings, bars and hands with a soft dry cloth now and then, and keep sprays and polish away from the gold finish. Before you fix it in place, hold it up against the wall to judge the height: a hand's width or two above a fireplace or table, or at eye level in a hallway, and it looks settled and in proportion.
