A shelving unit, 113cm tall, in wood. At 41cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. Open shelving is storage you are choosing to look at, so what goes on it is part of the decision. A shelf that will hold files wants doors; a shelf that will hold books and objects does not.

Zinc left outdoors loses its shine within a season and then stays as it is, which is either the appeal or the reason to keep it inside. Pine is a softwood, so it marks more readily than oak or beech — and takes a paint or a wash far better, because the grain drinks it in. Marks in pine read as age rather than damage. 5 drawers. A cupboard behind a door.

Furniture fails at the joints and the runners long before the surface wears out, which is why the way a piece is put together matters more than what it is finished with. Measure the shelf height against the tallest thing you own that has to go on it. Most units are sized for paperbacks, and a run of art books or LPs will not fit a shelf that suits a novel. It needs nothing beyond dusting, and a damp cloth on the finish rather than anything solvent.
