Description

This layered wooden plaque for Dad pairs a simple line drawing of two houses, one little and one tall, with a sentiment that says a great deal in a few words. The print reads "A DAD is someone YOU LOOK UP TO no matter how TALL you GROW", set in soft grey beneath the houses in a mix of neat capitals and loose handwritten script, with a sprig of leaves either side of the opening line. The rectangular white panel sits raised on a slightly larger natural wood backing, which gives the piece its layered look and a narrow border of wood grain all the way round. It stands 15cm tall, 12.5cm wide and 1.5cm deep, a modest size that sits happily among photographs and books.

It makes a thoughtful Father's Day gift, and is just as welcome alongside a birthday card for a dad who means the world. The little house and the tall house make the message plain: however grown up the children become, Dad is still the one they look up to. A stand on the back holds it upright, so it needs no nails or hooks and can go wherever he will see it most, on a bookshelf, a bedside table, a desk or the mantelpiece. Its white, grey and natural wood tones settle easily into most rooms, from a calm, pale scheme to a cosy cottage sitting room.

The back is a plain brown board with a tapered stand at its centre, which keeps the plaque steady on a flat surface. To keep it looking its best, dust it with a soft dry cloth and keep it away from damp and direct heat, as you would any wooden piece. It is slim enough to wrap neatly with a card, and we like it set beside a favourite photograph of Dad with the children, so the words and the faces tell the same story.
