Description

The Crowne stands 145cm tall on a round curved base measuring 25cm across, with the chrome tube sweeping up out of the foot in one continuous line. It is supplied without a shade, so the top of the stem is left ready for a fitting of your own choosing, and the E27 socket below it takes an ordinary screw-cap lamp. Polished chrome picks up whatever light is already in the room, which keeps the lamp looking lighter than its footprint suggests.

We reach for something like this beside an armchair, at the end of a sofa, or in a bedroom corner where a table lamp would need a table first. Because the shade is your decision, it suits a room where you already have a shade you like, or where you want the light softened above and the stem left plain and bright below. It is switched at the lamp rather than at the wall, so there is no crossing a dark room to find a plate, and with a suitable lamp and a compatible dimmer the level can be brought down for the evening.

The stem and base are finished in polished chrome throughout, and the lamp is double insulated, so no earth connection is called for. Chrome shows fingerprints far more readily than a matt finish, so we keep a dry microfibre cloth nearby and run it over the stem every so often; nothing stronger is wanted, as solvents and cream cleaners will dull the shine. Let the lamp cool before you handle the shade above it. It carries a one year warranty. We stock the Crowne in polished chrome, and would pair it with a drum or tapered fabric shade in a warm tone to stop the metal taking over a small sitting room.
