Description

A shelving unit, 106cm tall, in wood. At 80cm it is about as wide as a standard interior door. Against a chimney breast or in an alcove it reads as built in; in the middle of a wall it reads as furniture. Both work and they are different jobs.

Zinc weathers to a soft grey patina rather than rusting, and that dull, chalky surface is the finish people buy it for. It is a soft metal and dents rather than cracks. Pine is a softwood, so it marks more readily than oak or beech — and takes a paint or a wash far better, because the grain drinks it in. Marks in pine read as age rather than damage.

1 shelves. An anti-tip wall strap is included, and on a tall piece it should be used. 4 carrying handles.

A panel that carries weight over a span will sag eventually if the span is long enough. Shorter shelves, or a centre support, is what prevents it — not a thicker board. Anything tall and open needs fixing to the wall. It is one screw and a bracket, and it is the difference between furniture and a hazard in a house with children. Dusting is all it asks for, with a damp cloth on the finish and nothing solvent or abrasive.
