Description
This round wooden plaque hangs from a looped cord and brings the whole of Hey Diddle Diddle to a little one's wall. The full rhyme runs across the centre in soft blue lettering: 'Hey diddle diddle, The Cat and the fiddle, The Cow jumped over the moon, The little Dog laughed to see such fun, And the Dish ran away with the Spoon'. Around the verse, a ginger cat plays the fiddle, a little dog sits up laughing and a black and white cow leaps past a smiling crescent moon, with stars and a tiny raincloud scattered over the white ground. Three small stars hang from the lower edge, and beneath them dangle a cheerful spoon and a dish with legs, running away just as the rhyme says. The plaque measures 19.4cm across and 1.4cm deep, in warm yellow and white.
We see it most at home in a nursery or a little one's bedroom, hung beside a bookshelf or by a cosy reading corner where bedtime rhymes are shared. It suits children from birth to three years, the age when nursery rhymes are sung again and again, and the friendly animals give small eyes plenty to find while the words are read aloud. It is a decoration for the wall rather than a toy, so hang it where it can be looked at and enjoyed, out of reach of little hands.
The plaque is wooden, with its illustrated face in yellow and white, and the looped cord at the top lets it hang from a single hook, nail or picture pin. To keep it looking fresh, dust it now and then with a soft dry cloth and keep it away from damp. For a nursery wall, it sits happily alongside soft creams, sunny yellows and pale blues, and wrapped in tissue it makes a lovely gift for a little one's room.
