Description

Downlights do not have to be silver rings, and this one takes the opposite approach: a matt black trim, 9.6cm across the face, sitting over an 80mm cut-out. It takes a GU10 lamp and the lampholder is already fitted. The body is shallow and the fitting is light in the hand, so a run of them across a ceiling adds very little. Switched off, the dark face keeps its distance instead of drawing the eye.

We would reach for an LED reflector lamp here, which is what the fitting is built around, and 12W is the most it should carry. That suits kitchens, hallways, landings and back halls, where you want light on the floor and worktops without a pendant in the way. Black trims work particularly well against dark or timber-clad ceilings, and in rooms where the ceiling is busy with beams. If you want the light on a dimmer, choose dimmable lamps and a dimmer switch to match them, since neither comes with the fitting. Dry indoor rooms only; a bathroom or a porch needs a sealed fitting instead.

The trim is finished in an even matt black with no sheen to it, so it holds its colour under the light rather than glinting. It is double insulated, and it carries a one year warranty. For upkeep, let the lamp go cold, then run a dry cloth around the trim; matt finishes dislike solvents and abrasive creams, so keep those away from it. We stock the round version in matt silver and matt white as well, and there is a square Comfort downlight in the same finishes if you prefer corners to circles. Lamps are not included.
