The Clarke is a single-arm wall light with a warm brass curved arm, circular backplate and a black metal shade held in a brass frame. The shade tapers from 184mm wide at the top to a narrower bottom aperture, directing light downward and outward rather than straight down. A pull-chain switch with a brass ball finial hangs from the bulb holder, allowing the light to be switched on or off without needing a separate wall switch nearby.

Designed for bedside positions, hallways and areas where a wall switch is impractical or inconveniently located, the Clarke provides task lighting at around 1.2-1.5m above floor level when mounted at typical bedside height. The 222mm projection from the wall places the shade clear of the mounting surface, giving enough clearance for the pull chain to be operated comfortably. The downward-angled light suits reading in bed, illuminating hallway artwork, or flanking a bathroom mirror where overhead lighting alone is too harsh.

The black powder-coated metal shade contrasts with the warm brass metalwork, creating a two-tone aesthetic that pairs with both traditional interiors (dark wood, heritage paint colours) and modern schemes using black fixtures and warm metallics. The brass has a low-sheen satin finish rather than high polish, which softens reflections and reduces fingerprint visibility. What bulb does it take?

The Clarke takes one E27 (Edison screw) bulb up to 40W, sold separately. For bedside reading most users choose a 6-8W warm-white LED in 2700K. Decorative filament or globe bulbs work well as the bulb is visible through the open bottom of the shade.

How does the pull switch work?

The brass pull chain hangs from the bulb holder inside the shade. Pulling the chain once switches the light on; pulling it again switches it off. This is useful for bedside positions where a wall switch would be out of reach, or in hallways where adding a switch is impractical.

Can it be installed as a pair?

Yes. The Clarke is commonly installed in symmetrical pairs flanking a bed, a mirror or along a hallway. Each light operates independently via its own pull switch, so they can be controlled separately without needing a two-way switching circuit.

What mounting height is typical?

For bedside use, the backplate is typically mounted 1.2-1.5m above floor level, placing the shade at a comfortable height for reading in bed and keeping the pull chain within easy reach.
