Description

This Christmas biscuit barrel takes the shape of a shaggy Highland cow, sitting down with its legs out in front and dressed for the festive season. Made from ceramic in a warm brown glaze, its coat is modelled in deep, flowing strands that run all the way round to a curled tail at the back. A red and white Santa hat sits between its cream horns, a green and white striped scarf is knotted at the neck with a sprig of holly and red berries, and glossy black hooves finish the look. It stands 24.5cm tall, 16cm across and 16cm deep.

On a kitchen worktop, a sideboard or the end of a dresser, it keeps a supply of biscuits close at hand through December and well into the new year. At 16cm across it takes up little room, and at 24.5cm tall it is easy to spot when friends call round for a cup of tea. The festive hat and scarf make it a natural choice for the Christmas kitchen, while the brown coat and cream horns sit happily alongside farmhouse and country styles. It makes a cheerful Christmas gift for anyone with a soft spot for Highland cattle.

The cow's head is the lid: it lifts straight off the body to reveal a wide opening and a cream glazed interior, then settles back in place once you have taken a biscuit. The whole piece is glazed ceramic, so it has a glossy finish. To keep it looking its best, wipe it with a soft damp cloth and dry it straight away, and handle the lid with both hands, as ceramic can chip if knocked. Fill it with shortbread and tie a ribbon around its neck for a ready-made present, or set it beside the teapot as a festive welcome for the whole Christmas season.
