Description
The Chelsea is a 390mm outdoor half lantern handcrafted from solid copper with clear polycarbonate glazing and a single E27 bulb fitting inside. The copper body is mounted on black powder-coated aluminium brackets with scrollwork detailing, and the half-lantern profile sits flush against an exterior wall rather than projecting as a full four-sided lantern.
Designed for front doors, porch entrances, garage walls and exterior hallways, the Chelsea provides downward and side-cast light through the polycarbonate lens while the copper frame blocks rear light spill into the building. The IP44 rating protects internal components from rain and dust ingress, making the lantern suitable for covered and exposed positions on exterior walls. The 160mm projection from wall to front face of the lantern allows it to clear most external cladding and render without needing extended brackets.
The copper develops a natural patina over months of outdoor exposure, shifting from the bright metallic finish shown here towards deeper browns and eventually verdigris green depending on local climate and proximity to coastal air. This patina is a feature of the material rather than corrosion, and can be maintained at any stage by applying a clear lacquer or allowed to continue developing. The scrollwork brackets are powder-coated aluminium rather than copper, providing a contrasting black accent that remains stable over time.
The Chelsea range from Norlys includes pedestal lanterns, full wall lanterns, pendant lights and lamp posts in matching copper and black finishes, allowing consistent exterior lighting across a property. The large size suits properties with taller door frames and higher eaves, while a smaller version is available for single-storey extensions and lower wall positions.

Frequently Asked
What bulb does the Chelsea take?
The lantern uses a standard E27 bulb up to 60W. Bulbs are sold separately. Most installers pair it with a 6-10W warm-white LED filament bulb at 2700K for a traditional appearance, though any E27 bulb within the wattage limit works.
Will the copper change colour outdoors?
Yes. Solid copper develops a natural patina when exposed to weather, shifting from bright metallic copper towards brown tones and eventually verdigris green over months or years. This is a characteristic of the material. The patina can be stabilised at any stage with a clear lacquer, or allowed to continue developing.
Is it suitable for exposed walls or only covered porches?
The IP44 rating makes it suitable for both covered porches and exposed exterior walls. IP44 protects against rain from any direction and dust ingress, so the lantern can be fitted on walls fully exposed to weather.
How is it mounted?
The black aluminium brackets bolt to the wall using two fixing points. The copper lantern body then attaches to the bracket assembly. Wiring enters through the back of the bracket, and the lantern is wired to mains supply by a qualified electrician before the copper body is secured in place.
