Description

The Chelsea Grande is a 2.3-3.2m outdoor lamp post with a handcrafted copper lantern head mounted on a black powder-coated aluminium column. The lantern head follows traditional Victorian street lamp proportions — a tapered hexagonal copper frame with clear polycarbonate glazing panels and a decorative copper finial at the top. A single E27 bulb fitting sits inside the lantern (bulb sold separately). The copper develops a natural patina over time as it weathers, shifting from the initial warm metallic tone to darker bronze and eventually to green verdigris.

Designed for driveways, front paths and garden boundaries where period-appropriate outdoor lighting is needed, the Chelsea post is supplied in sections for installation at two height options: 2.3m or 3.2m depending on the number of column sections used. The black aluminium column features scrolled ironwork details at the junction between column and lantern head, giving visual weight to the transition. The IP44 rating protects against rain and solid objects above 1mm, making the lamp post suitable for exposed outdoor positions.

The 420mm wide lantern head and 320mm projection give the post presence without overwhelming typical residential front gardens. The clear polycarbonate glazing is impact-resistant and lighter than glass, reducing stress on the column joint. The post base requires ground fixing — either bolted to a pre-cast concrete foundation or set into wet concrete during installation. The lantern takes a standard E27 bulb up to 60W maximum. Bulbs are sold separately. Most installations pair this with a warm-white LED bulb between 6-10W and 2700K for traditional outdoor ambience.

Will the copper change colour over time?

Yes. The handcrafted copper lantern head develops a natural patina as it weathers outdoors. It will darken from warm metallic copper to bronze tones, and eventually to the characteristic blue-green verdigris seen on period architecture. This process is a feature of solid copper and cannot be prevented without regular polishing.

How is the lamp post installed?

The post requires ground fixing to a concrete foundation. The base can be bolted to a pre-cast concrete pad or set directly into wet concrete during installation. The column is supplied in sections allowing installation at either 2.3m or 3.2m height. Electrical connection requires running armoured cable underground from the mains supply.

Is it suitable for coastal locations?

The IP44 rating protects against rain and moisture, but salt air accelerates patina formation on the copper.
