Description

The shade is smoke glass, blown in the shape of an upturned wine glass with the stem to the ceiling, tinted just enough to take the glare off the lamp and cast a soft grey wash. Polished chrome metalwork holds it, bright and mirror-like where it meets the tinted glass. At 18cm across it is a small fitting that stays tight to the ceiling. It takes an E27 lamp, and it will dim if you pair a dimmable lamp with a suitable dimmer, though neither comes with it.

We reach for this one in halls, on landings and in stairwells where headroom is short and a hanging pendant would be forever in the way of a door or somebody's head. It works in a small bedroom, in a box room, or in a kitchen corner where the ceiling is already low. The smoke and chrome pairing reads as modern rather than fussy, and it sits happily alongside chrome ironmongery, glass splashbacks and brushed steel appliances. Keep it to dry rooms indoors; a shower room or an unheated porch asks for a sealed fitting instead.

The glass is the whole point, so it is worth keeping clean: smoke tints show dust and fingerprints more readily than clear glass, and a wipe with a barely damp cloth followed by a dry one brings the tone back. Let the lamp go cold before you start. The chrome asks for nothing beyond dusting, and no polish should touch it. It carries a one year warranty.
