Description

The Carson is a wall-mounted outdoor lantern built around a spherical cage of interlocking metal ribbons in a vintage iron finish, with a clear seeded glass cylinder inside. The cage is formed from curved metal straps that overlap and intersect to create a three-dimensional orb structure, approximately 255mm in diameter. A single E27 bulb sits inside the seeded glass (bulb sold separately, up to 60W), with the glass texture scattering light through the gaps between the metal bands.

Designed for outdoor use on house exteriors, porches, and covered patios, the Carson carries an IP44 rating for protection against solid objects over 1mm and water splashes from any direction. The 310mm projection from the wall gives the lantern presence on a render or brick facade without overwhelming a standard door or window surround. The vintage iron finish is a dark bronze-brown tone with subtle tonal variation that softens over time outdoors, pairing well with traditional, farmhouse and coastal architectural styles.

The seeded glass cylinder inside the metal cage shows small air bubbles and irregularities typical of hand-blown or hand-pressed glass, giving each piece slight variation in the light scatter pattern. The handcrafted metalwork means individual ribbon widths and overlap points differ slightly between units. The wall plate measures approximately 140mm in diameter and mounts to a standard UK outdoor electrical box. Hinkley backs the Carson with a 3-year guarantee covering manufacturing defects.

Frequently Asked

What does the IP44 rating mean for outdoor use?

IP44 provides protection against solid objects over 1mm and water splashes from any direction. The Carson is suitable for covered porches, under eaves, and other positions with overhead shelter. It is not rated for full exposure to driving rain or submersion.

What bulb is recommended?

The Carson takes a standard E27 bulb up to 60W. Most users pair this with a warm-white LED filament bulb between 4-8W and 2200K-2700K to complement the vintage iron finish and seeded glass texture. Bulbs are sold separately.

How is the vintage iron finish maintained outdoors?

The vintage iron finish is a factory-applied coating designed to weather naturally over time. Wipe with a dry cloth to remove dust and debris. Avoid abrasive cleaners or wire brushes that would damage the finish. The tonal variation is intentional and will develop further with outdoor exposure.

Can it be mounted on brick or render?

Yes. The wall plate mounts to a standard outdoor electrical box. Use appropriate fixings for the wall type (masonry plugs for brick, render fixings for textured surfaces). The 310mm projection means the lantern will stand clear of most wall textures.
