Description

This stoneware mug carries a single butterfly across its side. Its wings, body and fine antennae are picked out in the warm cream of the clay against a soft lavender purple glaze. The pattern is made by wax resist, a decorating method in which wax is laid on the clay before glazing so the colour cannot settle there. This leaves the butterfly in crisp outline, with dotted edges to its wings. A band of the same cream clay runs around the foot, while the purple carries on inside the cup and over the rounded handle. It stands 9.2cm tall, 11.4cm wide and 8.7cm deep, a neat everyday size for a cup of tea or coffee.

It is the kind of mug that becomes the one you reach for first: the morning tea at the kitchen table, a coffee at the desk, a slow cup in the garden on a warm afternoon. The muted purple sits happily alongside cream, grey, sage and natural wood, so it looks at home on an open shelf or a dresser among plain white crockery. The decoration is a single butterfly rather than words, so it suits almost anyone. It makes an easy, thoughtful gift on its own or with a packet of good tea tucked inside.

Stoneware is a dense, sturdy clay. The satin glaze gives the body a soft, smooth finish that contrasts with the bare clay of the butterfly and the band at the base. As good practice for glazed stoneware, we suggest washing it by hand in warm soapy water, drying it with a soft cloth and keeping scouring pads away from the cream clay. Set it on a tray with a small jug of milk for a pretty breakfast table, or wrap it in tissue with a favourite blend of tea for a gift that feels personal.
