Description

The Budrone is a box lantern outdoor wall light, with a black steel frame holding clear glass panels in front of a brown wood-effect back plate. It is 27cm tall and 12cm wide, and it stands 16.5cm off the wall, a compact size that sits comfortably beside a front door. It takes one E27 bulb of up to 40W, and the bulb is not included, so the colour and style of the light is yours to choose. The IP44 rating settles where it can go: it is protected from splashing water, so it lives outdoors on a house wall or a garden wall.

We think it suits a front door, a back porch, a side passage or the wall beside a patio, wherever you want a light to welcome you home after dark. The black frame and the wood-effect plate sit well against dark window frames, timber cladding, painted render or plain grey concrete, giving a modern lantern shape with a softer, natural-looking warmth. The clear glass on the front and sides lets light spill across the surrounding wall as well as outwards, so the lantern frames your doorway rather than just marking it. A matching pair either side of an entrance gives a balanced, welcoming look.

The body is steel and the panels are clear glass, set into the black frame on the front and sides. There is no switch on the light itself: it is switched at the wall, so you turn it on and off from a wall switch. As a hardwired mains light, it is installed by a qualified electrician, and the installation instructions come as a download. The packed weight is 1.73KG, handy to know when you plan the job. Our practical tip: a clear filament E27 bulb of no more than 40W makes the most of the open glass box.
