Description

A wall light, 26cm tall, in black. At 13cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. A wall light puts illumination at head height without using a table or a floor, which is why it suits a hallway, a stairwell or the side of a bed better than any lamp.

Against a pale wall a dark frame is graphic and deliberate; against a dark wall it almost vanishes, leaving the glass floating. The slubs in linen — the thick and thin places in the yarn — are not flaws. They are why the same colour reads differently across a surface.

Wiring is for 1 E14 lamp up to 6-9W LED, supplied separately. E14 is the standard screw fitting, so a replacement is a supermarket purchase rather than a specialist one. It is dimmable, so the level is set at the wall rather than fixed at the bulb. The head adjusts, so you can aim the light at a book rather than a ceiling. A Candle shaped bulb, which is the word to look for on the box.

Two shades of the same size can light a room completely differently depending on how open the top and bottom are. A narrow top pushes light down into a pool; a wide one lets it wash the ceiling as well. Dust is the whole of the maintenance and it matters more than it sounds: an even film of dust on a shade dims a room by more than most people would guess, and a soft brush restores it in a minute.
