Description

Five small light heads sit in a row behind a slim black trim, dropping narrow, warm pools of light rather than a broad wash. The colour is 3000K, on the softer side of white, and it flatters timber, paint and stone without tipping into yellow. The LEDs are built in, so there is nothing to swap and nothing to buy alongside it, and the driver comes with it. It is not dimmable, so it suits a circuit where full output is what you want, or a room with a second, softer light you can turn down.

We reach for linear downlights like this where a row of separate round downlights would break the ceiling up too much. Over a kitchen worktop it gives a clean line of task light; in a hallway it draws the eye along; above open shelving the tight beams keep light on the shelves rather than spilling wide. It suits anyone who wants the light on the work and the hardware kept quiet. It belongs in dry, heated rooms indoors, away from steam and splashes, which puts it in kitchens, halls, studies and living rooms rather than a shower area.

The fitting is finished in black, so it reads as a dark slot in a pale ceiling and all but vanishes in a darker one. Give the visible face an occasional wipe with a dry microfibre cloth, and keep polishes and household sprays off the lenses. It carries a three year warranty.
