Description

An ornament, 51cm tall, in black. At 29cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. Height above the eye changes what you see of it. A form with a strong outline works high on a shelf where it is read as a silhouette, while one with detail in the surface wants to be at hand height.

A dark finish reads as a shape rather than a surface, so the outline does the work and the detail recedes. Against a pale wall that is graphic; against a dark one the piece almost disappears. Mango is a fast-growing hardwood with a pronounced, irregular grain and a natural colour range from pale honey to deep chocolate within a single board. That variation is the material, not a defect. The strength is in the section, not the bulk: steel holds its shape at a thickness that would flex in almost anything else. It is heavier than aluminium, which is a virtue indoors and a consideration if the piece has to be moved often.

Weight is worth checking on anything that stands upright. A light piece on a narrow base goes over the first time it is knocked, and a heavy one is what you want anywhere a door slams or a cat walks.

Dusting is all it asks for, with a damp cloth on the finish and nothing solvent or abrasive.
