Bergen Outdoor Wall Light - Black IP55

The Bergen is an outdoor wall light with a black powder-coated steel body, a clear pill-shaped glass lantern and a wide flat disc shade that extends 280mm from the wall mount. The fitting houses a single E27 bulb up to 60W (sold separately) behind the glass, with the disc shade directing light downwards while shielding the bulb from direct rain. The IP55 rating protects against dust ingress and water jets from any direction, making it suitable for exposed UK coastal and inland locations.

Designed for doorways, porches, garden walls and garage exteriors where downward light is needed at head height, the Bergen projects 365mm from the wall on a straight arm and sits 220mm tall from the base of the mount to the top of the domed roof. The circular wall mount is 100mm diameter and fixes to standard masonry with appropriate plugs and screws (not supplied). The black finish is a low-sheen powder coat over steel that resists UV fade and corrosion in marine and urban environments.

The central glass lantern is held between the disc shade above and a protective steel band below, creating a layered geometric form that references mid-century Scandinavian outdoor lighting rather than traditional coach lanterns. The flat disc throws light downwards onto paths and steps while keeping the bulb shielded from horizontal rain, which extends bulb life and maintains light output in wet conditions. The fitting accepts dimmable E27 LED or filament bulbs, giving control over brightness and colour temperature depending on the bulb chosen.

What does the IP55 rating mean for outdoor use?

IP55 means the fitting is protected against dust ingress and low-pressure water jets from any direction. It can be installed in fully exposed locations including coastal areas subject to wind-driven rain, though the disc shade design already provides additional protection by directing rain away from the glass lantern.

What bulb should I use?

The Bergen takes a standard E27 (Edison screw) bulb up to 60W. Most users fit a warm-white LED bulb between 6-10W and 2700K for outdoor ambient light. Filament-style LED bulbs with visible elements work well behind the clear glass. Bulbs are sold separately and the fitting is compatible with dimmable bulbs when paired with an appropriate dimmer.

How far does it project from the wall?

The total projection is 365mm from the wall surface to the outer edge of the disc shade. The straight arm accounts for approximately 200mm of this, with the remainder made up by the diameter of the glass lantern and disc shade assembly.

Is the black finish suitable for coastal locations?

Yes. The powder-coated steel body is designed for marine environments and carries a 5-year guarantee from Norlys. The finish resists salt corrosion and UV fade. Regular rinsing with fresh water (twice yearly in coastal locations) will extend the life of the coating.
