Description

The Bellthorpe wall light backs a mink half shade with a slotted bronze plate, and those slots do real work: light passes through them as well as around the shade, so the fitting reads as a soft band of light rather than a solid block. It measures 500mm high by 320mm wide and projects just 140mm, shallow enough to line a hallway or a stair wall without catching anyone passing. At 1.1kg it is easy to hold in place while wiring. One E27 lamp rated up to 10W in LED sits behind the shade, and the wall light dims with a dimmable lamp and a compatible dimmer switch.

We would use this one where a wall light needs to be quiet but not plain. A pair either side of a bed keeps bedside tables free for books and a glass of water; a single fitting beside a reading chair gives you light over the shoulder without a floor lamp taking up the corner. Along a landing, the pattern of light through the slots gives you something to look at on an otherwise blank wall. Mink is a warm grey brown that settles easily against taupe, stone, sage and soft white paint, and the bronze reads dark and warm rather than orange.

The slotted plate and mounting are metal in a bronze finish, with the mink shade fitted over a rigid frame. Dust the metal with a dry soft cloth, working along the slots rather than across them, and lift dust from the shade with a soft brush or a vacuum on low suction; keep water and solvent cleaners away from both. As a Class 1 fitting it needs an earthed supply and a qualified electrician, and the IP20 rating limits it to dry indoor rooms.
