Description
This rounded earthenware mug wears raised yellow honeycomb across the top and base of its front, with a single bee in relief crossing the speckled cream body between them. You can feel each hexagon under your fingertips, and the bee is picked out in black and yellow with pale wings. Turn it round and the far side is left plain, a soft cream scattered with fine dark flecks. The loop handle is finished in the same warm yellow as the honeycomb. It holds 400ml, plenty of room for a proper mug of tea, and it stands 8.3cm tall, 10cm wide and 12.5cm deep.
It is a cheerful mug for the kitchen or the breakfast table, and just as at home on a desk or beside the armchair for a mid-morning coffee. The cream and yellow sit easily alongside pale wood, soft whites and country-style kitchens, and the honey tone brings a little sunshine to a grey morning. The rounded body sits nicely cupped in your hands, which makes it a good choice for a hot chocolate on a cold evening too. It also makes a lovely small gift on its own or tucked into a hamper with a jar of honey.
Earthenware is a traditional ceramic, and here it carries a smooth, glossy finish over the speckled cream, with the raised honeycomb and bee giving the mug a gentle cottage feel. As with most decorated earthenware, a hand wash in warm soapy water with a soft cloth is the kindest way to keep the yellow bright, and it is worth drying it well before it goes back in the cupboard. Hang it from a hook by the kettle so the bee faces out, or set it on a wooden board with a teaspoon and a pot of honey for an easy, sunny breakfast tray.
