Description
This earthenware storage jar is shaped like an old-fashioned bee hive, with ribbed bands of white and yellow running round it from base to lid. A little bee perches on the lid as its knob, wings raised, and a second bee is sculpted climbing up the side of the jar, both picked out in black and yellow. Fine black speckles across the glaze give the stripes a country pottery look, and the glossy finish catches the light on every ridge. It stands 15cm tall and 11cm across, and holds 560ml, a generous amount for a honey pot.
As a honey pot it belongs on the breakfast table or the kitchen worktop, where the bee knob makes the lid easy to find and lift. Away from mealtimes it sits just as happily on a dresser shelf or a kitchen windowsill, adding a sunny note to a plain white or wooden kitchen. The lid has a small notch shaped into one side of its rim, a neat detail in keeping with the hive design. Being as decorative as it is useful, it also makes a cheerful gift for a kitchen that could do with a little colour, and its warm stripes suit a country or cottage style especially well.
Made from earthenware, a ceramic with a warm, homely character, the jar is finished in a glossy glaze over its speckled stripes. The lid lifts off completely and sits on the rim, with the bee standing on its dome. For everyday care, wipe it inside and out with a soft damp cloth and dry it well, and handle the two sculpted bees gently, as small raised details on any ceramic are best treated kindly. At 11cm across it takes up very little room, so it can stay out on the worktop. Fill it, set the lid in place and let the bee keep watch.
