Description

This cheerful MDF house decoration shows a big brown bear wrapping a little cub in a hug, sitting beside a small house with a bright spray of flowers rising next to its roof. The house has four small windows and a pink front door marked "NO 1", and the words "BEAR HUGS" are printed along the front of the base. Above the bears, yellow, pink and orange flowers on slender stems with soft green leaves give the piece its lift, while the roof and base carry a natural wooden finish. Its colours are warm brown and lilac. It measures 12.5cm tall, 14cm wide and 3cm deep, so it is a small, easy piece to find room for.

We think it suits a bookshelf, a mantelpiece, a windowsill or a dressing table, anywhere it can be enjoyed at a glance. It stands on its own flat base, so it needs no wall, nail or hook, and it can be moved from room to room as the mood takes you. The scene of a parent bear holding a cub close makes it a thoughtful Mother's Day gift, the kind of small present that says what a card sometimes cannot. Tuck it beside a photograph or a vase, or let it stand alone where morning light can catch the flowers.

The piece is made from MDF, with the house, bears and flowers cut as separate layered shapes set into the base, which gives it a pleasing depth when seen from the side. The roof and base have a wooden finish. To keep it looking its best, dust it with a soft dry cloth now and then and keep it away from damp, as MDF does not like getting wet. For Mother's Day, wrap it in tissue with a handwritten note, or set it on her shelf ready for the morning, and let the two bears say the rest.
