Description

This wooden mantel clock takes the classic Napoleon shape: a gently arched top that sweeps down on either side into scrolled shoulders, set on a stepped base with a row of rounded beading along its front. The wood has a warm brown satin finish that lets the grain show through, and a deep brown surround frames a cream dial marked in black Roman numerals, read by a pair of black spade hands. It stands 24cm high, 40.5cm wide and 8cm deep, so it sits comfortably on most mantelpieces without crowding them.

We think it looks most at home on a fireplace mantel in a sitting room, and its shallow depth means it suits a narrow shelf, a hall console, a sideboard or a bookcase in a study just as well. The Roman numerals are bold and well spaced against the cream, so the time is easy to read from across the room. Its traditional lines sit naturally with period furniture and classic interiors, and the warm brown wood brings a homely note to a plainer, more modern scheme too. Low feet at each end of the base hold it steady on any flat surface.

Inside is a quartz movement that runs on a single AA battery, which fits into the compartment at the back. The battery is not included, so it is worth having one to hand.
