Description

The Beacon Type B is a disabled refuge outstation built to BS5839-9:2021 specification for emergency voice communication systems in UK buildings. The unit provides two-way duplex audio communication between a refuge point and a central control station, with a large green 'Call Cancel' button, directional arrow graphics, integrated speaker grille, and LED call status indicator on a green polycarbonate faceplate.

Designed for stairwell refuge areas, protected lobbies and evacuation lifts in multi-storey residential, commercial and healthcare buildings, the outstation allows mobility-impaired occupants to request assistance during an evacuation and maintain voice contact with building control or fire wardens. The hands-free operation means no handset to lift or hold — pressing the call button initiates the voice link, and the high-volume ringer alerts the user when control responds.

The 180mm x 110mm faceplate fits either flush or surface mount on a standard 2-gang UK back box (sold separately). The green polycarbonate construction resists impact and wear in high-traffic areas, and the contrasting white graphics provide clear visual cueing under emergency lighting conditions. The LED call status indicator gives immediate feedback when a call is active, answered, or cancelled.

Frequently Asked

What is a Type B disabled refuge outstation?

A Type B outstation provides two-way duplex audio communication between a refuge point and a central control or master station. It allows the person at the refuge to speak and listen simultaneously, like a normal phone conversation, rather than pressing a talk button to alternate between speaking and listening.

What back box is required?

The outstation fits a standard UK 2-gang back box for either flush or surface mounting. The back box is sold separately. Flush mounting requires a 35mm minimum back box depth set into the wall; surface mounting uses a surface-fixed 2-gang pattress box.

Is this compliant with current UK building regulations?

Yes. The Beacon Type B is fully compliant with BS5839-9:2021, the current British Standard for design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of emergency voice communication systems in buildings.

Can the outstation be tested without triggering a full alarm?

Testing procedures depend on the system design and the central control unit the outstation is connected to. Refer to the system commissioning documentation and the product manual for test mode operation.
