Description

Sold as a bare suspension, this is the piece you build a light around: a compact antique brass ceiling cup, a length of flex, and an E27 lampholder waiting for a shade of your choosing. The cup measures 12cm across, so it reads as a small detail above the shade rather than something competing with it. The drop adjusts over a generous span, from close under the ceiling to full stairwell length, which means you set the height to the room instead of working around a fixed cord.

We reach for this one when somebody has already found a shade they like and needs something plain and honest to hang it from. It takes the majority of pendant shades on the market, so it suits a bedside pair, a run of three over a kitchen island, or a single drop over a hall table. With a suitable lamp and a compatible dimmer on the circuit it will dim, and it accepts up to 20W, which is ample for a GLS style LED in the warm output most people want overhead. It is a fitting for dry rooms indoors, and it needs an earthed supply.

The finish is a softened, slightly aged brass with a gold warmth to it, which sits well against cream, deep green and bare timber, and pairs happily with fabric, glass or metal shades. Keep metal polishes and creams well away from it; a dry cloth over the cup and along the flex is all it wants, with the power off first. It carries a one year warranty. Shades and lamps are chosen separately, so budget for both. What size shade will fit this pendant?

It is built as a universal pendant and takes the vast majority of shades sold with a standard E27 ring or gimbal, from small 20cm drums up to larger empire shapes. Choose the shade for the room and the fitting will follow.

How low can I hang it?

The drop runs from a minimum of 280mm up to 3280mm, so it covers everything from a low-ceilinged bedroom to a tall stairwell void.

Which lamp should I buy?

A GLS A60 shape LED with an E27 cap is the recommended choice, rated no higher than 20W. No lamp is supplied with the pendant.

Can it be dimmed?

Yes, provided you fit a dimmable lamp and a dimmer switch matched to it. A non-dimmable LED will flicker or buzz on a dimmed circuit.

How do I clean the antique brass?

Switch off at the wall and let the lampholder cool, then wipe the cup with a dry or barely damp cloth. Brass polish, cream cleaners and solvents will strip the aged tone.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

No. With an IP20 rating it belongs in dry rooms only, so kitchens, halls, bedrooms and living rooms rather than bathrooms or covered porches.
