A wide drum shade sits close to the ceiling here, wrapped in taupe faux silk and lined in halo gold, so the light takes on a warm cast as it spreads. Inside, five screw-fit lampholders sit on a satin nickel frame, and a frosted acrylic diffuser closes the underside to soften the view up into the fitting. At 40cm across it reads as a generous circle with very little drop, and it throws both ways: down through the diffuser and out through the sides of the shade.

We would put this in a hallway, on a landing or in a bedroom where a pendant would hang too low to be comfortable, though it has the output for a dining room or a sitting room used mostly after dark. The lampholders take standard E27 lamps and we would choose LED GLS globes, warm white where the room is for resting and something crisper over a table. The shade is dual-layer faux silk, taupe outside and gold within, on a nickel-finished frame, and the diffuser panel is acrylic rather than glass, which keeps the weight down for its width. Clean each material in its own way: a soft brush or an upholstery nozzle for the fabric, a barely damp cloth for the diffuser. It carries a one year warranty. It stands 380mm tall overall, of which the metal body accounts for 180mm, and the shade is 400mm in diameter.

What lamps should I use?

Five E27 lamps are needed, and LED GLS (A60) globes are the recommended choice, up to 20W each.

Can I put it on a dimmer?

Yes, provided you use dimmable lamps and a compatible dimmer. Neither the lamps nor a dimmer come with it.

Is an earth connection needed?

Yes. It is a Class 1 fitting and requires an earth.

Where can it be used?

Dry interior rooms only, as it is rated IP20. Bathrooms and covered porches call for a fitting with a higher rating.

What colour is the gold?
