Description

Five E27 lamps sit beneath one broad drum shade here, carried on an antique brass frame that holds the whole fitting close to the ceiling. The shade is finished in gold leaf on the outside with a white laminate within, so the outer face glows warm while the light thrown down stays clean and even. At 40cm across it reads as a proper centrepiece for a room, with none of the drop that a pendant brings.

We reach for a fitting like this where a hanging light would simply be in the way: hallways with a turn in the stairs, dining rooms in older houses, bedrooms and landings where the ceiling sits a touch low. Spreading the light across several lamps means each one can be modest and the room still feels properly lit, which suits a space used morning and evening rather than in short bursts. We would put LED GLS lamps in it, and it will dim if you pair suitable lamps with a compatible dimmer, neither of which is supplied with the light.

The metalwork wears an aged brass tone rather than a bright polish, so fingermarks and the ordinary dulling of years show far less than they would on a mirror finish.
