Five E27 lampholders sit on one antique brass frame beneath a broad drum shade, so the light comes from a single generous shape rather than a cluster of small ones. The shade is dual faux silk, taupe on the outside with a halo gold lining that warms everything reflected down through it, and the base is closed by a frosted acrylic diffuser held in an antique brass trim. That diffuser softens the view of the lamps from below and spreads the output evenly, while the 40cm width keeps the proportions calm.

With that many lamps behind a diffuser there is enough output for a dining table, a kitchen island or a sitting room that has been making do with too little light. The drop adjusts generously, so the shade can sit close under an ordinary ceiling or hang far lower in a stairwell or a double height hall. We would fit LED GLS lamps here and pair them with a trailing edge dimmer, which suits long evenings around a table. It is one we reach for where a run of small pendants would look busy.

The metalwork is finished in antique brass, a softened gold with depth to it that sits well against warm walls and wood. Dust the faux silk with a soft brush, working round the shade rather than scrubbing at it, and wipe the acrylic diffuser with a dry cloth once the lamps have gone cold. Keep it to dry rooms indoors, away from bathrooms and anywhere weather can reach. It carries a one year warranty. Elsewhere in the range the same antique brass appears on the linear pendants and a semi flush fitting, with polished chrome, satin nickel and satin black among the other finishes. Lamps are not included.

What lamps does it need?

It takes five E27 lamps, up to 20W each. We would use LED GLS (A60) shapes, which fit neatly inside the shade and sit above the diffuser without crowding it.

Can it be dimmed?

Yes, provided you use dimmable lamps with a compatible dimmer. Neither the lamps nor a dimmer are supplied.

How low will it hang?

The drop runs from 405mm at its shortest to 3330mm at its longest, so it works under a standard ceiling and in tall stairwells alike.

What size is the shade?

It measures 40cm across and 18cm deep, with a body height of 315mm.

What is the diffuser made of?

Frosted acrylic, set in an antique brass trim across the base of the shade. It hides the lamps from direct view and evens out the light thrown downwards.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

No. It is rated IP20 and belongs in dry rooms such as dining rooms, kitchens, halls and bedrooms.
