A wide faux silk drum shade in ivory pearl sits close to the ceiling here, lined in white laminate so light comes back down soft and even. Three E27 lamps sit behind it, spread across the plate rather than bunched at the centre, which keeps the fabric lit from edge to edge. The visible metalwork is polished chrome, bright against the pale fabric. At 45cm across it covers a fair span overhead while staying shallow, and with suitable lamps and a compatible dimmer the level can be brought right down.

It suits rooms where the ceiling sits low and a pendant would be in the way: bedrooms, landings, hallways and smaller sitting rooms. There is enough output here for it to work as the main light in a decent sized room, while the pale shade keeps things quiet rather than pulling the eye. We reach for it when someone wants the softness of a fabric shade without the drop, and it earns its place over a dining table in a cottage room where headroom is tight. Three E27 lamps, up to 20W each. A GLS A60 shape in LED is the sensible choice and gives the most even glow through the faux silk.

Can it be dimmed?

Yes, provided you fit dimmable lamps and pair them with a compatible dimmer. Neither the lamps nor the dimmer come with the fitting.

How far does it hang below the ceiling?

The overall height is 170mm, so it stays tight to the ceiling and clears heads in rooms where a pendant would not.

How wide is the shade?

450mm in diameter, which reads as a generous circle in a bedroom or hallway without overwhelming a modest room.

How should the shade be cleaned?

Lift dust off with a soft brush or the upholstery head of a vacuum on low suction. Avoid damp cloths and sprays on the faux silk, and use a dry cloth on the chrome.
