Three E27 lampholders sit inside a single wide drum, so one broad pool of light does the work of a small cluster. The 50cm shade is finished in silver leaf on the outside, with a white laminate lining that keeps the falling light clean and bright. Above it, the polished chrome suspension is mirror-bright rather than brushed, reading as a highlight against a pale ceiling. Everything hangs from one point, which keeps things quiet in a room that already has plenty going on, and the drop can be set short for a low room or run right out where there is real height to play with.

It earns its keep over a dining table, where the width of the shade covers a full setting, and it works just as well in a tall hallway or above a stairwell landing. Three lamps give ample light for a family sitting room, and dimming is possible if you pair dimmable lamps with a compatible dimmer. We would fit LED GLS globes rated up to 20W each and leave it there, since the shade does the softening. Keep it to rooms that stay dry, clear of bathroom splashes and anywhere open to the weather.

Chrome this bright will show fingerprints, so a dry microfibre cloth now and again keeps the metalwork looking sharp; dust the shade gently and keep moisture away from the laminate. How far down will it hang?

The drop adjusts from 405mm at its shortest to 3330mm fully extended, so it copes with an ordinary ceiling height and with a stairwell or double height space.

What lamps does it take?

Three E27 lamps, up to 20W each. An LED GLS A60 globe shape is the sensible choice. Lamps are not supplied.

Can it be dimmed?

Yes, provided you use dimmable lamps together with a compatible dimmer. Neither is included.

What size is the shade?

It measures 500mm across and 200mm deep, with an overall body height of 370mm.

How should I clean it?

Switch off at the wall and let the lamps cool first. Buff the chrome with a dry microfibre cloth to lift fingerprints, and dust the shade with a soft brush rather than anything damp.

How heavy is it?

The fitting weighs 1.6kg complete with its shade.
