Three lamps sit behind a single wide drum here, so the light spreads rather than pooling tightly. The shade is finished in gold leaf on the outside with a white laminate lining, and measures 40cm across for a broad, shallow profile. Below it, a frosted acrylic diffuser with an antique brass edge closes the underside, softening the view upward and taking the glare off the lamps. The suspension and ceiling plate are antique brass, warm and lightly aged rather than bright.

It suits rooms that need a good spread of general light with some warmth in it: above a dining table, in a wide hallway, or centred in a sitting room with the drop kept short. The drop extends to a little over 3.3m, so it is also worth considering for a stairwell or a room with a tall ceiling. It will dim, given lamps rated for dimming and a compatible dimmer. We reach for this one where a cluster of small pendants would look busy and a flush fitting would fall flat.

The diffuser is acrylic rather than glass, so it is light in the hand and less prone to chipping, while the gold leaf face and pale lining give the shade a soft glow when lit. For care, run a dry duster over the outside of the shade and take a barely damp cloth to the diffuser, with the power off at the wall and the lamps cool first. It is intended for dry interiors, so keep it clear of bathroom zones and open porches. It carries a one year warranty. Antique brass runs through the wider Baymont range too, on the linear pendant and the single light semi flush fitting, with polished chrome, satin nickel and satin black also offered. Lamps are not included; we would fit GLS-shaped LED lamps with an E27 base.

What size is the shade?

The drum is 400mm in diameter and 180mm deep, giving a wide, shallow shape that spreads light sideways as well as down.

How low will it hang?

The drop runs from 390mm at its shortest to 3310mm at full extension, so it works in standard rooms and in tall stairwells alike.

Which lamps should I use?

It takes three E27 lamps, and LED GLS A60 lamps are the sensible choice. Do not exceed 20W per lamp.

Can I put it on a dimmer?

Yes, provided the lamps are dimmable and paired with a compatible dimmer. No dimmer is supplied with the fitting.

How do I clean the diffuser?

Switch off, let the lamps cool, then wipe the acrylic with a soft cloth just dampened with water. Avoid solvents and abrasive creams, which can cloud the surface.

Does it block the view of the lamps from below?

Yes. The frosted acrylic diffuser sits across the underside of the shade, so you see a soft wash of light rather than the lamps themselves.
