Description

Three E14 lampholders sit beneath a single drum shade of faux silk, so the light from a floor lamp of this size reads as one soft pool rather than scattered points. The shade is 50cm across, black on the outside and lined in white, which keeps the fabric from swallowing the output and pushes it down over a chair or table. The stem and base are matt black, and a foot switch on the flex handles the on and off without any reaching. It stands 1.6m tall.

This is a lamp for the corner of a sitting room, the gap behind an armchair, or the end of a sofa where a table lamp would be too small to matter. The broad shade suits reading and general evening light in equal measure, and the height carries the glow above the eyeline of anyone seated. We like it in rooms with plenty of pale wall to work against, where the black drum has something to stand out from. Fit dimmable LED candle lamps and add a compatible dimmer, and the level comes down for later on.

The frame is finished in matt black throughout, and the shade is a laminated faux silk that holds its drum shape well. For cleaning, run a soft brush over the fabric now and then to lift dust and keep water and sprays away from it; the painted metal wants no more than a dry cloth. It is meant for dry rooms indoors and works from an ordinary household socket. It carries a one year warranty. We keep it alongside our plainer metal floor lamps for anyone who wants fabric rather than a hard shade, and it pairs happily with a black or brass table lamp across the room.
