Description

A wide drum of faux silk, 60cm across and 22cm deep, gathers five arms onto a central stem. The outer face is black, the inner laminate white, and the metalwork carries a champagne gold finish that warms the light on its way past. From below it reads as a single broad shape rather than a cluster of small lights, and the drop can be set short for a low ceiling or run out long over a table.

We would hang it over a dining table, where a shade this broad answers the width of the boards, or on a landing where the adjustable drop earns its keep. It suits a large bedroom as well, set over the foot of the bed rather than straight above a pillow. Dimmable lamps will take it from full working light down to something quieter for the evening, and both the lamps and the dimmer are chosen separately. Keep it to dry indoor rooms; a bathroom or a covered porch asks for a different fitting.

Fabric does the work here: faux silk on the outside, a white laminate inner face, over champagne gold metalwork and a black outer finish that keeps the whole thing quiet when the lamps are off. Dust is the only real upkeep, and a soft brush or a vacuum on its lowest setting will lift it; sprays and damp cloths do fabric no favours, while the gold asks only for a dry wipe.
