Description

Five lamps sit inside a broad drum shade of faux silk, grey on the outside with a white laminate lining that pushes the light back down into the room. At 60cm across the shade is wide and shallow in proportion, closer to a soft disc than a deep cylinder, and the multi-arm frame that holds the candle sockets is finished in satin nickel. The whole thing hangs on a chain, so it settles with a little weight to it rather than floating.

This is a fitting for rooms with some floor to cover: over a dining table, above a wide stairwell landing, or centred in a sitting room where a single small shade would look lost. Because the light comes from several small candle lamps spread across the frame rather than one bright source, the glow through the silk is even and the lining keeps the useful light going downward. We would fit LED candle lamps here and pair them with a compatible dimmer if you want to take the level down for evenings.

The shade is a fabric-covered drum, so treat it gently: a soft brush or the upholstery head of a vacuum will lift dust from the silk, and the satin nickel needs nothing more than an occasional wipe with a dry cloth, no polish. Keep water and sprays away from the fabric. It is a fitting for dry, heated rooms and takes an earthed supply. It carries a one year warranty. The grey and white pairing sits quietly with pale walls and warm timber, and the satin nickel is soft enough to sit alongside chrome or brushed steel taps and handles elsewhere in the room without clashing.
