Description

Five slim arms curve out from a central antique brass stem, each ending in a small candle lampholder, and the whole cluster sits beneath a single wide shade of 60cm across. The shade is dual faux silk, nude beige on the outer face with a paler moonlight tone within, so the light arrives softened rather than direct. It hangs on a chain, giving a generous span of drops for rooms with height to play with.

This is a fitting for the middle of a room: over a dining table, in a stairwell, or centred on a landing where the ceiling is tall enough for it to sit clear of heads. Lamps set behind the faux silk give a broad, even glow rather than a pool, which suits a room used for eating and talking more than one used for close work. Dimmable lamps will let you take the level down in the evening, though a dimmer switch is a separate purchase. We reach for it where a single large shade would look too plain and a chandelier too busy.

The metalwork is finished in antique brass, warm and slightly aged rather than bright, which keeps the arms reading as part of the shade rather than against it. Keep it dry and indoors, on an ordinary household supply. For the shade, a soft brush or a low suction upholstery nozzle lifts dust from the faux silk without dragging the weave, while the brass asks for nothing more than a dry cloth, with polishes and sprays kept well away. It carries a one year warranty. Lamps are not included, and we would fit LED candles here and forget about them.
