Description

Five arms fan out inside a wide drum of faux silk, so light comes from a group of candle lamps rather than one central source. The frame and ceiling plate are matt black, and the shade is black outside with a white laminate lining that pushes the light back down. At 60cm across it reads as a broad, shallow disc rather than a tall shape, and the drop adjusts so it can sit close to the ceiling or hang well below it.

We reach for this one over a dining table, where the width of the shade sits well above a long top and keeps the light on plates and glasses. It works in a wide hallway or a sitting room with a decent ceiling height as well, since the drop can be set low over furniture or taken up in a space people walk through. Dimmable lamps will dim it, though a dimmer switch is bought separately. LED candle lamps with an E14 fitting are what we would put in it.

The shade is fabric on a rigid liner, and the metalwork wears a flat black that shows fingerprints far less than a polished finish. Dust it with a soft brush or a vacuum upholstery head on low suction, and wipe the arms with a barely damp cloth once the lamps have gone cold. This is a fitting for dry rooms indoors, so a hall, bedroom or dining room rather than a bathroom or an open porch. It carries a one year warranty. Black outside with a pale lining, it sits happily beside brass or oak elsewhere in the room. Lamps are not included.
