Description

A wide black drum in faux silk sits at the centre of this design, hung from a champagne gold frame with three arms tucked inside it, each taking a small candle lamp. At 45cm across, the shade is broad enough to keep the lamps out of view from most seated angles, and the pale laminate lining pushes light back down rather than letting it soak away into the fabric. Lit, you get a soft wash through the shade and a brighter pool underneath.

We would hang it over a dining table first, where the width covers a round top or a compact rectangle without dominating the room, and it suits a landing or a generous hallway just as well. High ceilings are no trouble, since it will hang as low as 1.8m. Candle lamps on the E14 sockets are what we would fit, in a warm white for a dining room. Dimming is possible if you choose lamps rated for it and pair them with a compatible dimmer, which is not supplied here.

The shade is fabric over a frame, the metalwork finished in champagne gold, and the fitting is meant for dry rooms indoors, well clear of steam and splashes. Keep the fabric fresh with a soft brush or a vacuum upholstery head on low suction, and give the gold a wipe with a dry cloth; water and sprays will mark faux silk. It carries a one year warranty. The black outer against warm metal keeps it calmer than a fully gilded pendant, and it takes well to rooms with dark joinery or a deep painted ceiling. Lamps are not included.
