Description

A tall three light floor lamp with a gathered organza shade in grey over antique brass metalwork, made to spread a soft, diffused light rather than a hard pool. The shade measures 45cm across, broad enough to read beneath from an armchair without the fitting crowding the seat. Candle lamps sit on E14 sockets inside it, and a foot switch on the flex means the light goes on and off with a nudge of your toe.

We reach for a floor lamp like this in a sitting room where the ceiling light is doing too much work on a dark evening, and it does the same job in a bedroom corner or beside a desk chair. It stands 1.6m tall, so the shade sits above seated eye level and the glow falls across a page rather than into your eyes. It can be dimmed if you fit dimmable lamps and add a separate dimmer; otherwise the foot switch handles everything.

The stem and base are finished in antique brass, warm and a little muted rather than bright, which sits happily alongside older wooden furniture and darker paint. Organza is a fine fabric and shows marks, so keep it dry: a soft brush or a vacuum upholstery tool on low suction lifts dust from the gathers, and the brass asks for nothing more than a dry duster. It plugs into an ordinary socket and belongs in dry rooms indoors. It carries a one year warranty. Lamps are not included, and we would choose warm white LED candles to keep the shade looking soft.
