Description

This little metal trinket box takes the form of a plump tropical fish, glazed in rich red with two broad white bands outlined in fine gold. Every fin, from the spiky crest along its back to the fanned tail, is picked out in fine gold lines, and the body carries a textured scale pattern beneath its glossy red finish. Rows of small black embellishments run beside each white band, a round black eye sits on either side of the head, and a gold mouth finishes the face. The fish is 3.9cm high, 2.6cm wide and 5cm deep.

The fish opens along a gold seam: its two halves part on a small hinge to show a warm orange red interior, just right for a ring, a pair of stud earrings or a tiny keepsake. On a dressing table it keeps a favourite ring close at hand overnight, and on a bedside table it gives earrings a home of their own. It also sits happily on a bookshelf or a desk as a cheerful splash of colour, and its small size means it tucks in among other ornaments without crowding them.
