Description

The Baltimore flush ceiling light is a small, simple fitting: a cone-shaped porcelain and ceramic body that sits tight to the ceiling, with a narrow collar beneath it holding a single bare bulb. It is 5.6cm tall and 7.5cm across, so it takes up almost no room overhead and lets the bulb itself become the feature. It comes in black or white, both smooth and clean-lined. Bulbs are sold separately: it takes one E27 bulb of up to 60W, so you choose the bulb yourself and can pick one whose shape you like to look at.

We see it first in hallways, where a narrow space or a modest ceiling height calls for a fitting that stays out of the way. Because it is so compact, it works well in a row: several Baltimore lights spaced along a hallway give an even run of light from the front door onwards, each one neat against the ceiling. Black stands out crisply against a pale or coloured ceiling, while white sits quietly on a white one, leaving the bulb to hold the eye. It is rated IP20, so it is for dry rooms only, and it is made for indoor use.

Each light is made to order for you in Ireland, its body formed from porcelain and ceramic, with the lampholder set in a collar beneath the cone. As a mains fitting, it is wired in to the mains by a qualified electrician. The maker guarantees the fittings it makes for five years from the date of purchase; bulbs are not covered by that guarantee. One practical note before it goes up: have an E27 bulb of 60W or less ready, so the light is working the moment it is fitted.
