Description

The AV:Link HDMI to Composite RCA converter takes a 1080p or 720p HDMI signal and scales it down to analogue composite video (CVBS) with stereo audio on three RCA phono outputs. The unit accepts HDMI input from laptops, media players, set-top boxes and game consoles, then converts the digital signal to analogue for connection to older CRT TVs, VHS recorders, composite-only projectors and legacy monitors that lack HDMI input.

Designed for home users connecting modern streaming devices to older equipment, AV installers maintaining legacy projector systems, and educational or corporate environments where older displays remain in service, the converter operates plug-and-play with no driver installation. Power is drawn from a USB port (cable included) or a standard USB mains adapter (not included). The unit sits between the HDMI source and the composite display, with the HDMI socket on one side and three colour-coded RCA phono sockets (yellow video, red/white audio) on the opposite side.

The 66 x 55 x 20mm metal-cased unit weighs 38g and can be cable-tied behind equipment racks or placed on a desktop without movement. The converter supports PAL, NTSC 3.58, NTSC 4.43, SECAM, PAL/M and PAL/N output formats, selected via a switch on the side panel. Video input resolution is auto-detected, handling both 1080p@60Hz and 720p@60Hz HDMI sources. Output is always composite standard definition regardless of input resolution, as this is the maximum resolution composite video supports.

HDMI sources with HDCP copy protection may not display if the content is restricted from analogue output. The converter passes unprotected signals without issue, making it suitable for personal media libraries, presentations and educational content rather than commercial streaming services with active HDCP enforcement.

Frequently Asked

Does this converter work with Netflix or streaming services?

HDMI sources with HDCP copy protection may not output through this converter if the content provider restricts analogue conversion. It works reliably with personal media libraries, presentations and unprotected video sources. Commercial streaming services often enforce HDCP, which can prevent signal passthrough.

What power supply does it need?

The converter is powered via a mini USB port rated at 5V DC. A USB cable is included in the box. You can power it from a laptop USB port, a TV's USB port, or a standard USB mains adapter (not included).

How do I select between PAL and NTSC?

A format switch on the side panel toggles between PAL, NTSC 3.58, NTSC 4.43, SECAM, PAL/M and PAL/N. For UK use, select PAL. For North American legacy displays, select NTSC 3.58.

What resolution is the composite output?

Composite video is standard definition only, typically 576i for PAL or 480i for NTSC. The converter scales the 1080p or 720p HDMI input down to match the composite format. You cannot achieve HD resolution through composite video.
