Description

The Austral is a 9-light LED cluster pendant from Schuller pairing faceted methacrylate spheres with brushed gold hardware in a spiralling cascade arrangement. Each of the nine spheres houses an integrated LED module, combining for a total 78W output at 3000K warm white. The spheres are suspended at staggered heights from a 55cm diameter gold ceiling plate, creating a vertical drop between 75cm and 300cm adjustable on installation.

Designed for double-height entrance halls, above dining tables in rooms with 2.7m+ ceilings, and hotel lobbies, the Austral provides both ambient and decorative light. The faceted methacrylate diffuses the LED output to eliminate visible point sources and reduce glare, while the geometric surface creates refracted highlights across walls and ceilings when lit. A TRIAC driver is included along with a separate dimming module that accepts either wall-mounted dimmer control or the supplied RF remote, allowing brightness adjustment without rewiring.

The gold finish on the canopy, cable housing and sphere caps is a matte-textured brushed metal that catches natural light when the pendant is off, providing daytime visual interest. The transparent methacrylate spheres show minimal tinting, allowing the gold accents and LED glow to dominate. At 9.85kg the fitting requires secure ceiling fixing but remains manageable for single-installer suspension and levelling. The IP20 rating restricts use to dry indoor spaces only.

Is the Austral dimmable?

Yes. The pendant includes a TRIAC driver and a separate dimming module that accepts either a wall-mounted dimmer or the supplied RF remote control, allowing brightness adjustment from 0-100%.

What ceiling height is needed?

The minimum drop height is 75cm and the maximum is 300cm, adjustable during installation. For a dining table the pendant typically sits 700-900mm above the surface, requiring ceiling heights of 2.4m or above. Double-height spaces of 3.5m+ allow the full cascade effect to be appreciated.

Can it be installed by one person?

At 9.85kg the Austral is manageable for a single installer to suspend and level, though a second person can simplify handling the 55cm canopy during ceiling fixing. The assembly instructions PDF is available in the Downloads tab.

What is methacrylate?

Methacrylate is a clear acrylic-based polymer. In the Austral the spheres are faceted on the surface to diffuse LED light and create refracted highlights, while remaining transparent enough to show the internal LED modules when lit.
