Description

The Ashland Bay is a 404mm outdoor wall lantern in weathered zinc with clear seeded glass panels and a single E27 bulb fitting. The lantern body is built from cast aluminium finished in a textured weathered zinc coating that simulates aged metal, giving it a colonial-era appearance without the maintenance burden of raw zinc. The seeded glass cylinder diffuses light through deliberate air bubbles and imperfections in the glass, softening the direct glare from an exposed filament bulb.

Designed for front porches, side entrances, garage doorways and covered pathways, the lantern carries an IP44 rating for protection against solid objects above 1mm and water splashes from any direction. The 244mm projection from the wall positions the light forward enough to illuminate steps and approach paths while staying clear of door swings. The top-mounted carry handle is decorative rather than functional — the lantern is fixed to the wall via a concealed back plate.

The weathered zinc finish pairs well with coastal, rural and period-restoration exteriors where a modern gloss black or polished steel fitting would clash. The seeded glass panels are held in a metal cage structure that protects them from impact while allowing maximum light transmission. The fitting accepts any standard E27 LED, halogen or filament bulb up to 60W (sold separately), giving flexibility to choose the light temperature and output that suits the installation position.

Frequently Asked

What does the IP44 rating mean?

IP44 means the lantern is protected against solid objects above 1mm in size and water splashes from any direction. This makes it suitable for covered porches, doorways and pathways where it's sheltered from direct rain but exposed to moisture and condensation. It is not suitable for fully exposed positions with no overhead cover.

What bulb does it take?

The lantern takes a standard E27 (Edison screw) bulb up to 60W, sold separately. For a period look that matches the colonial styling, pair with a warm-white LED filament bulb at 4-8W and 2200K-2700K. For brighter task lighting on steps or pathways, a 10-12W LED at 3000K works well.

Can it be fitted on a rendered or brick wall?

Yes. The lantern fixes to the wall via a back plate with two mounting points. Use appropriate wall plugs and screws for the wall material — masonry fixings for brick or block, cavity fixings for render over insulation board. The cable entry point on the back plate accommodates standard UK outdoor electrical cable.

How is the seeded glass cleaned?

The glass panels can be wiped with a damp microfibre cloth and mild soapy water. Avoid abrasive cleaners or scouring pads as they may scratch the deliberately textured surface. The metal cage structure can be disassembled from the back plate to access the glass for deeper cleaning if needed.
