5ft IP65 T8 Single Tube Batten Fitting - Grey

Built to take a single 5ft T8 tube, this is a sealed batten fitting rated IP65, which means the housing is dust tight and protected against water jets from any direction. The grey body forms a long channel, and a clear ribbed diffuser clips over the top and runs the full length, held by catches spaced along both sides. Each end is closed off, and a cable gland at one end brings the supply cable in without breaking the seal. The manufacturer also gives it an IK06 impact rating.

IP65 is the rating to look for where an open fitting would not last. It suits garages, workshops, stores, stables and unheated outbuildings, and commercial spaces such as warehouses, car parks and plant rooms where dust and the occasional wash down are part of the week. It is rated for bathroom zones 1, 2 and 3, though not zone 0, so it can run above a shower area in a utility bathroom or changing room. At 1500mm it fits neatly along a joist or a long wall, and several can be spaced along a bay for even cover.

The fitting is not dimmable, so wire it to an ordinary switch rather than a dimmer circuit. Wattage, brightness and colour temperature all come from the tube you fit, and the manufacturer states no figures for the fitting itself, so pick the tube on the light you want: a crisper white for a workshop bench, something warmer where the room is also used for sitting. Check the tube you have or plan to buy is a 5ft T8 before ordering, since a 4ft or 6ft tube will not sit in the clips. It is sold as one fitting, with a minimum order of one. Does a tube come with the fitting?

What does the IP65 rating actually protect against?

IP65 means the housing is dust tight and protected against low pressure water jets from any direction, which covers damp, dusty and wash down areas.

Can I put it in a bathroom?

Yes. It is rated for zones 1, 2 and 3, but not zone 0, so it must not go inside the bath or shower enclosure itself. Have bathroom wiring done by a qualified electrician.

Can it be dimmed?

No. It is listed as non dimmable, so run it from an ordinary on and off switch and keep it off any dimmer circuit.

How much room do I need to fit it?

The body is 1500mm long, 72mm wide and 86mm deep, and it is worth leaving a little clearance at the gland end for the cable.

How tough is it for a workshop or garage?

The manufacturer rates it IK06 for impact, a mid range figure on the impact scale that covers the everyday knocks a busy workspace brings.
