Description

The Knightsbridge 3-gang 47mm back box is a galvanised pressed steel enclosure designed to mount a 1-gang and 2-gang wiring accessory plate side by side in a single opening. The box measures 220mm wide by 73mm high with a 47mm recessed depth, providing the cavity space needed for switch, socket or dimmer wiring behind two standard UK faceplates.

Designed for residential and commercial installations where multiple switches or sockets need to be grouped together without installing separate back boxes, the enclosure fits standard 86 x 86mm single-gang and 86 x 146mm double-gang plates. The four fixed mounting lugs take standard faceplate screws, and the integral earth terminal allows for safe earthing of metal faceplates. Pre-cut 20mm knockouts on all four sides allow conduit or cable entry from any direction.

The 1mm pressed steel construction is galvanised for corrosion resistance and manufactured to EN 60670 standards. The 47mm depth accommodates most switch and socket mechanisms without needing deeper excavation into plasterboard or masonry walls. The IP20 rating makes this suitable for dry indoor locations but not for bathrooms, outdoor use or other wet environments where a higher IP rating would be required.

What faceplate sizes does this back box accept?

The box is designed for one standard 86 x 86mm single-gang plate and one 86 x 146mm double-gang plate mounted side by side. Other plate combinations may not align correctly with the mounting lugs.

Can this be used in a bathroom?

No. The IP20 rating means this back box is only suitable for dry indoor locations. Bathrooms and other wet environments require back boxes with higher IP ratings, typically IP44 or above depending on the zone.

What wall depth is needed for installation?

The 47mm recessed depth requires a minimum wall cavity of 50-55mm to allow space for the box and any wiring or connectors behind the faceplates. Plasterboard stud walls and most masonry walls accommodate this depth without issue.

Does it come with fixing screws?

No. The back box is supplied bulk-packed without fixings. You will need appropriate wall plugs and screws for masonry, or plasterboard fixings for stud walls, plus faceplate screws to secure the switches or sockets to the mounting lugs.
