Description
The Knightsbridge EMPOWER4BK is a 3.5W LED emergency downlight with an integrated LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) battery providing a minimum 3-hour backup illumination at 140 lumens. The fitting operates in either maintained mode (permanently illuminated) or non-maintained mode (illuminates only on mains failure), selectable during installation. A separate green LED charge indicator shows battery status without opening the fitting.
Designed for commercial corridors, escape routes, stairwells and residential fire-safety compliance, the downlight recesses into ceilings with a minimum 80mm void depth behind a 45mm cut-out. The 60mm black polycarbonate bezel sits flush with the ceiling plane once installed. The fitting ships with a pre-wired battery pack and a corridor lens accessory in the box, giving a narrow beam pattern suited to long hallways where wider spread would waste light.
The 5500K daylight colour temperature provides high visual clarity for navigation during power outages, contrasting with the warmer 2700K-3000K ambient lighting typically used in residential and hospitality spaces. The IP20 rating limits the fitting to dry indoor locations. The polycarbonate construction and Class II double-insulated design mean no earth connection is required, simplifying installation on older wiring where earth availability may be inconsistent.
The LiFePO4 battery chemistry offers longer cycle life and better thermal stability than standard lithium-ion cells, with the L70B50 rating of 30,000 hours indicating the fitting retains 70% of initial light output after 30,000 hours of operation. A manual emergency test button on the driver allows periodic compliance testing without cutting mains power to the circuit.

Frequently Asked
What is the difference between maintained and non-maintained mode?
In maintained mode the downlight remains permanently illuminated when mains power is present, switching to battery backup during a power cut. In non-maintained mode the downlight only illuminates when mains power fails. The mode is selected during installation via a switch on the driver.
How long does the battery last on a single charge?
The LiFePO4 battery provides a minimum 3 hours of emergency illumination at 140 lumens once fully charged. The green LED charge indicator shows when the battery has returned to full charge after a discharge event.
What ceiling void depth is required?
A minimum 80mm void depth is needed above the ceiling to accommodate the driver unit and battery pack. The downlight itself recesses 32mm into the ceiling through a 45mm diameter cut-out.
Can it be used in bathrooms?
No. The IP20 rating limits the fitting to dry indoor locations only. Bathrooms, kitchens and other moisture-prone areas require a minimum IP44 or IP65 rating depending on zone.
