Description

This is a sealed batten fitting for a single 2ft T8 tube, the length most people mean when they talk about replacing a 600mm fluorescent. The moulded body and the clip-on diffuser close the fitting off along its whole length, which is what the IP65 rating describes: fully protected against dust, and protected against water jets from any direction. Overall it measures 655mm long, 72mm wide and 86mm high, so it wants a little more room than the 600mm tube alone suggests. It also carries an IK06 impact rating, and it is not dimmable.

Battens like this one earn their keep where an open fitting would not last long: garages, workshops, utility rooms, sheds, plant rooms and covered walkways, where dust and damp are simply part of the room. The IP65 rating also allows use in bathroom zones 1, 2 and 3, but not zone 0, which is the inside of the bath or the shower basin itself. A cable gland at one end takes the incoming supply, and the body mounts flat against a ceiling or a wall. Two feet suits a single garage bay, a cellar stair or a run above a workbench.

The tube is the thing to settle before you order. This fitting takes one 2ft T8 tube, and the manufacturer does not state whether a tube is supplied with it, so check the length and the cap on your existing tube first. Colour temperature and output come from the tube rather than from the fitting, which means warm white or cool white is a choice you make at that stage. There is no dimming here, so it wants an ordinary switch rather than a dimmer plate. It is sold as one fitting, with a minimum order of one. What size tube does it take?

One 2ft tube, nominally 600mm long, in the T8 standard. T8 tubes are 26mm in diameter and carry a two pin G13 cap at each end.

Can I fit it in a bathroom?

Yes. The IP65 rating covers zones 1, 2 and 3, so it can go above a bath or shower, but never in zone 0, which is the inside of the basin itself.

Can it be dimmed?

No, this fitting is non dimmable, so wire it to an ordinary switch. Fitting a different tube will not change that, so avoid putting it on a dimmer plate.

How much room does it need?
